Six art students were invited to spend a week in Berlin in March 2011. During their fully funded stay they had the opportunity to visit art galleries, meet with key players in the industry and even lunch with the president of the Berlin parliament. The visit served to give the young Namibians a first impression of the artworld in Germany.

The students were: Ismael Shivute, Fallon Alicia Strauss, Actofel Ilovu, Immanuel Nicodemus, Martha Ndilimeke Auala and Tuauoovisua Katuuo

Workshops

Workshop for Namibian artists: one week workshop presented by Ms Simone Haack for UNAM students.

Portraiture Workshop Report

From the 30th of March to the 3rd of April (Mon – Fri) the Berlin artist Ms Simone Haack has presented a “Portraiture Workshop” at the University of Namibia for 15 students.

Ms Simone Haack is currently in Namibia on a 2-month residency through the ‘shared experiences’ visual art residency program of p.art.ners berlin-windhoek. She stays and works on the artist farm Peperkorrel in the Windhoek District, where the owners and artists Doerte and Volker Berner are taking care of her.

Since the ‘shared experiences’ project aims at sharing experiences, skills and knowledge between Namibian and German artists and participants, p.art.ners in conjunction with UNAM and the artist have planned a workshop for UNAM students. For the duration of the workshop Ms Haack has been staying in Windhoek.

Prof Hercules Viljoen (Head of the Visual Arts Department) has consulted in advance with the artist to decide on the most useful and necessary workshop focus, so that the students get the maximum benefit. UNAM decided that they are especially interested in a portraiture workshop. Ms Haack has substantial experiences in presenting workshops to students and adults, with the main focus being the human figure.

The workshop started every day at 9am and continued till 4:30pm with a lunch break in between. The participants were divided into two groups, of which one group came in the morning and the other group in the afternoon. This was due to the student’s other classes, but also enabled Ms Haack to give more attention to the smaller groups and individuals.

The workshop started off with a general introduction and a talk/slide-show of portraits from different artists throughout the ages, but also an insight into Ms Haack’s own works. Technical details, such as the proportion of the face and how to express individual character traits were discussed. Students then started with their own work, first sketching with charcoal from a life model and then later using other media, such as pens, pencils and acrylic paints. The students also learned how to make self-portraits with the help of mirrors. The workshop ended with a general presentation of the works produced and a ‘crit’ session, as well as a discussion on how to take the learned skills further in the future.

Ms Haack says that most students showed considerable improvement, but for some progress was slow, as it was the first time for them to draw, especially from a life model. The feedback from the students was that they were very excited about the new skills and they would love to have more workshops like this. They would also like to get a follow-up workshop in portraiture so that they can deepen their learned skills and learn more.
